Judge interest by actions, not ambiguous signals: who initiates, makes plans and follows up?

After 52 pairs of unfamiliar men and women talked for about ten minutes, they judged whether the other person had flirted. They were better at identifying the absence of flirting than its presence. A further 261 people watching video clips produced the same pattern. Rather than guess from expressions or tone, notice who initiates contact, plans the next meeting and follows up when you do not.

Long-distance relationships need not be worse; the first three months after reunion can be the difficult part

Long-distance relationships were actually more stable while partners remained apart, partly because infrequent meetings encouraged idealization. Reunion was the difficult transition. About half the couples in follow-up became geographically close; the other half broke up while apart. Of those who reunited, one-third separated within 3 months.

Look at registration statistics before accepting family claims: marriage and divorce rates use different denominators than you may think

China registered 6.106 million marriages in 2024, about one-fifth fewer than the year before, and 3.513 million divorces. Dividing these gives about 57.5%, often advertised online as a divorce rate above half. But those are not the same couples, so it does not mean half of marriages end in divorce. The official rates of 4.3‰ and 2.5‰ use the national population as denominator.

Include the health association, but discount it because the evidence is observational

Married people had about 12% lower mortality than unmarried people, while people who had never married had about 24% higher mortality than married people. This does not establish an effect of marriage. Healthier, wealthier, more socially connected people are both more likely to marry and more likely to live longer. The mostly Western figures offer only a rough scale for China.

For money, understand the legal default before deciding on a written agreement

Without a written agreement, wages, bonuses, business and investment income, and inherited or gifted property acquired during marriage generally belong to both spouses under Chinese law. Premarital property and gifts or bequests expressly intended for one spouse are separate. A written agreement can assign property separately and binds both spouses. A spouse doing more childcare or eldercare can request compensation at divorce.

When parents fund a home, record whether it is a loan or a gift at the time of transfer

In China, parents' premarital contributions default to a gift to their own child. Unspecified contributions after marriage are treated under joint-property rules. From February 2025, where one side's parents fully funded a home during marriage without specifying a gift to their own child alone, a divorce court may award it to that child and then determine compensation for the other spouse. If it is a loan, document and sign it that day.

A large loan taken by your spouse does not automatically become your debt if you did not sign or later accept it

Under Chinese law, a secret loan substantially beyond ordinary household needs is not automatically yours if you neither signed nor accepted it afterward. The creditor must prove it supported your joint life or business. However, money that actually bought a jointly occupied or jointly owned home often allows the creditor to prove that connection.
