What to arrange after someone dies

Explore each chapter to understand the effort, benefits and context.

Read the chapter introduction

This chapter focuses on money and practical procedures: what to do immediately after a death, which fees can be checked against published lists, how to recover money held in different accounts, and which matters close relatives may handle. The first five entries follow the sequence of events: the scene, the death certificate, care of the body and cremation, disputes about the cause of death, and cancellation of household registration. The remaining entries are ordered by practical value. For arrangements to make while an older relative is alive—advance guardianship, wills, and accounts—see chapter 17. For the three occupational death benefits, see chapter 19.

The funeral provisions discussed here are China's revised Regulations on Funeral and Interment Administration, effective March 30, 2026. Funeral subsidies and survivors' benefits under pension insurance are governed separately by human resources and social security rules. The original research did not obtain text that could be checked word for word, so this chapter does not give specific amounts for those benefits.

For an accidental, unexplained, or unexpectedly discovered death, call the police immediately and preserve the body and scene

In China, a death involving an accident, an unknown cause, or a person living alone found after a long interval may require police investigation and certification. Disturbing the scene makes the circumstances harder to establish and can complicate the death certificate needed for cremation, household deregistration, and insurance claims. If the category is unclear, call China's police number, 110, and let the authorities determine the procedure.

Obtain the death certificate promptly: the treating institution issues it, or local primary care handles a natural death at home

In China, a hospital death is certified by the institution responsible for treatment. A natural death at home is certified by the community health service or township health center serving the area. Where the cause of a natural death is clear, the cited rule requires issuance within one day. Household deregistration, cremation, housing provident fund withdrawal, social insurance benefits, insurance claims, and inheritance all depend on this document. Make several copies.

Use an authorized funeral home for transport, storage, and cremation; ordinary storage is generally limited to three days

Under China's regulations, funeral homes are specifically responsible for transporting, storing, embalming, preparing, and cremating bodies. A hospital mortuary can temporarily hold a body but cannot provide funeral services. Funeral-home storage is generally limited to three days unless an extension is arranged. Cremation requires both a death certificate and a cremation confirmation document. Keep the cremation certificate issued afterward for later inheritance and insurance procedures.

If the cause of death is disputed, act immediately on an autopsy and preserve the medical records

In a Chinese medical dispute over the cause of death, the cited rule requires the autopsy within 48 hours, or up to seven days where the body can be kept frozen. Raise the issue immediately rather than waiting until the deadline to request it. Close relatives must sign consent. If refusal or delay beyond the prescribed period prevents determination of the cause, the responsible party bears the consequences. Request sealed preservation of records at the same time. An autopsy is no longer possible after cremation.

Check the basic and additional funeral-service lists and their authorized prices

China's national basic-service list includes body transport, storage, farewell ceremonies, cremation, ash storage, and ecological burial, plus ash-niche interment provided by government-run funeral institutions. Charges follow the applicable pricing rules. Providers may not invent services or fees outside the authorized lists. First ask which services are basic and what the local rates are, then discuss extras.

Record and report forced bundles, surcharges, and fees created by splitting one service into several

China's regulations specifically prohibit failures to display prices, charging above displayed prices, forcing purchases through bundles, and compelling families to buy another provider's services. Splitting one service into several charges can also be a disguised price increase. Ask for the price list and retain receipts and messages. You can complain afterward: market regulators handle pricing violations, while civil affairs authorities oversee funeral services.

Check that funeral intermediaries are registered with county-level civil affairs authorities

In China, funeral agents, purchasing intermediaries, ceremony planners and hosts, and information consultants must register with county-level civil affairs authorities. Unregistered intermediaries are outside the funeral-service information system. Public lookup availability varies, so calling the county office is a dependable way to check. Fraudulent charges and trading in deceased persons' information can lead to enforcement action.

Check every source of money separately: housing provident funds, social insurance, and occupational death benefits

In China, heirs and legatees can withdraw a deceased worker's housing provident fund balance. It is easy to overlook because it is not in an ordinary bank account and is not automatically paid out during estate distribution. An occupational death can also generate three separate benefits: a funeral subsidy, pensions for dependent relatives, and a lump-sum occupational death benefit. Ask the social insurance agency where the deceased was insured about any pension individual-account balance and survivors' entitlements.

Close relatives may request access, copies, correction, or deletion of a deceased person's personal information

Under China's Personal Information Protection Law, close relatives may exercise specified rights over a deceased person's personal information for their own lawful, legitimate interests. A platform refusing must explain why, and the requester may bring a court action. There is an exception where the deceased made different arrangements during life, such as an account legacy arrangement or clear instructions.
