Cancel household registration within the legal deadline: before burial in urban areas and within one month in rural areas
China's cited household registration rules require death registration before burial in cities and within one month in rural areas. Delaying cancellation can complicate inheritance transfers, benefits, and insurance-related procedures.
What it takes
Nothing to apply. Bring the death certificate and household registration book to the police station.
What you may gain
Article 8, paragraph 1, of the Household Registration Regulations requires the head of household, a relative, a person who supported the deceased, or a neighbor to report the death to the registration authority and cancel registration before burial in urban areas or within one month in rural areas. If the person dies at a temporary residence, its registration authority must notify the authority at the permanent registered residence to cancel the record.
Context & considerations
An unchanged household record can hold up inheritance, benefit, and insurance processes that check registration status. Pension payments received after entitlement ends must be returned; do not continue claiming them. At the police station, ask how to notify social insurance and health insurance offices and apply for funeral assistance. See entry 9 for provident fund balances and social insurance matters.
