Check China's foreign-ministry travel warnings before departure and avoid destinations under the highest warning
China's foreign ministry uses four broad warning levels, with “Do not travel for now” the highest. From September 15, 2026, avoiding high-risk countries/regions is also addressed by administrative regulation. Passport and border staff may warn and, where necessary, discourage travel. Check current advice before departure.
What it takes
Free; a few minutes on the Chinese consular-service website.
What you may gain
The four broad levels run from “Pay attention to safety,” through “Strengthen precautions” and “Travel cautiously,” to “Do not travel for now.” China's 2026 regulation requires citizens to monitor overseas and destination risk warnings and avoid travel or continued stays in high-risk locations. Immigration authorities must give warnings during document processing and exit checks, and where necessary discourage travel to the highest-risk destinations or places with sudden high incidence of serious personal-safety cases.
Context & considerations
Warnings change; check the live page rather than treating this book as a destination list. As recorded on September 7, 2026, highest-level notices remained listed for Eswatini (August 25, 2026), Palestine (October 10, 2023), Sudan (April 17, 2023), Afghanistan (February 17, 2023), Syria (January 4, 2023), Peru (December 29, 2022) and Somalia (November 24, 2022), with separate notices for northern Myanmar and parts of DR Congo. These are historical examples, not a current clearance list. Travel agencies also have disclosure duties; request written destination-risk information before joining a tour.
