Use the written rules on sleep, homework, exercise, and rankings when discussing school demands

Grade B evidenceValue: Moderate
In plain language

Chinese education guidance specifies ten hours of daily sleep for primary pupils, nine for junior secondary students, and eight for senior secondary students. Morning lessons should generally start no earlier than 8:20 a.m. in primary schools or 8:00 a.m. in secondary schools. The 2025 guidance calls for at least two hours of combined physical activity daily and prohibits ranking students by examination results. If sleep is chronically inadequate, examine the timetable before blaming the child for being slow.

What it takes

Nothing. Raise concerns with the school or local education authority when needed.

What you may gain

The 2021 sleep-management notice sets the ten-, nine-, and eight-hour targets and the morning start times above and prohibits mandatory organized teaching activities before the stated school arrival schedule. Recommended bedtimes are no later than 9:20 p.m. for primary pupils, 10:00 p.m. for junior secondary students, and 11:00 p.m. for senior secondary students. Off-campus training should end by 8:30 p.m., and live online training by 9:00 p.m. The notice prohibits gaming services for minors from 10:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.; this describes that document and is not the full set of subsequent gaming restrictions. China's October 2025 mental health measures require at least two hours of combined physical activity daily and encourage 15-minute breaks. They prohibit examination-based student rankings and mechanical repetitive or punitive homework and encourage one homework-free day each week.

Context & considerations

Both are official education documents, but implementation differs substantially by locality and school, hence grade B. They provide a basis for discussing what the school is expected to do. For adult sleep, see chapter 2 and chapter 3.
