Treat implausibly lucrative overseas recruitment as a scam warning, especially when documents or freedom would leave your control
Warning signs include unusually high pay, no qualifications or experience required, no formal contract, assembly in a border city and someone keeping your passport. False exit documents can lead to refusal at the border. Participation in qualifying illegal activities abroad may bring a 6-month-to-3-year exit restriction after return to China.
What it takes
Free, but declining an apparently attractive job can be difficult.
What you may gain
Chinese authorities describe people deceived into overseas travel or inventing reasons for illegal departure to engage in cross-border gambling and telecom fraud, with serious threats to life and property. The 2026 rules require true, lawful reasons for entry, exit and residence; false material or statements can lead to document refusal or denial of exit. Citizens conducting overseas illegal/criminal activities that harm national security/interests may be barred from leaving for 6 months to 3 years after return. Administrative detention for obtaining documents by deception or illegal entry/exit can also bring a 6-month-to-3-year bar.
Context & considerations
The combination of extraordinary pay, no credential checks, no proper contract, border-city assembly and retained passports is a recurring pattern. Northern Myanmar has specific consular warnings. Once there, loss of passport and freedom can make leaving impossible.
