Cut the biggest essentials: shared monthly rent, home cooking, and subsidized meal services

Grade B evidenceValue: High
In plain language

In China’s 2025 household-spending figures, food, tobacco, and alcohol accounted for 29.3%, and housing for 21.7%—more than half together. Reducing these categories can have the largest effect. In the author’s experience, daily or hourly rooms cost more over a month than sharing a monthly rental, and cooking costs less than delivery. Ask whether a job includes meals and accommodation; those benefits can remove two major expenses.

What it takes

Finding a room can take one to three days. A deposit is often about one month’s rent, an estimate from the author rather than an official figure. Cooking takes around 30–60 minutes daily. The challenge is doing it consistently instead of ordering delivery.

What you may gain

In 2025, annual per-capita consumer spending in China was RMB 29,476. Food, tobacco, and alcohol accounted for RMB 8,631, or 29.3%, and housing RMB 6,397, or 21.7%. Together they exceed half of spending. China’s older-adult meal services are intended for older people generally and include community canteens, shared dining tables, and meal-assistance points, with additional differentiated subsidies for disadvantaged older people. For comparison, as of 1 January 2026, the lowest province-level first-tier monthly minimum wage was Qinghai’s RMB 2,080 and the highest was Shanghai’s RMB 2,740.

Context & considerations

The claim that daily or hourly accommodation costs much more than a shared monthly rental is an experience-based judgment, without an official numerical comparison. Meal-service prices and access for younger people vary locally. Ask clearly whether a vacancy includes food and accommodation. The national ministry’s wage-table page was unavailable, so the source used the Sichuan government repost.
