Buy travel cover for overseas treatment and medical evacuation, not just flight delays
Chinese domestic medical insurance generally does not reimburse overseas care, and consulates do not fund it. Major hospitalization and medically escorted or specialist-aircraft repatriation can overwhelm a household. Prioritize two limits: overseas medical expenses and emergency medical evacuation/repatriation.
What it takes
Short-trip policies commonly cost tens to hundreds of RMB in China.
What you may gain
Overseas medical bills are generally the traveler's responsibility: Chinese public medical insurance generally does not reimburse care abroad, and consular protection does not advance the cost. See consular cost limits and Article 26. The largest threats are serious-injury hospitalization and transport home, potentially requiring a dedicated aircraft or medical escort. Compare coverage limits for treatment and for emergency transfer and return to China.
Context & considerations
TODO: verify typical overseas treatment/evacuation costs from official or industry statistics. Check destination coverage, exclusions for diving/skiing/motorcycling and other activities, and whether the insurer pays the hospital directly or requires you to advance funds. Visa-free travel still needs consideration of insurance.
