Before learning a skill, check whether it has recognized grades and whether employers reward them
China is promoting a new eight-level vocational skill system and encouraging companies to link pay to skill grades. Outstanding workers may have their grade recognized without the usual seniority requirements. This is a policy direction, with substantial variation between places and employers. A skill with a national occupational standard and a progression route at least offers a basis for discussing pay increases by grade.
What it takes
Nothing. Check once before committing.
What you may gain
The new eight-level system calls for stronger skill-based pay distribution and guidance for enterprises to link job pay both to the value of the position and to skill grade. Local authorities are asked to increase the intensity and frequency of assessment and appointment at senior-worker level and above. Eligible enterprises may conduct their own employee skill assessments. Outstanding employees may receive direct recognition of an appropriate grade without the usual requirements for years of work, existing grade, or seniority.
Context & considerations
This describes policy, not a guaranteed wage increase. Implementation differs considerably by locality and enterprise. The practical step is to check for a corresponding national occupational standard and a recognized grading route before choosing a skill. Without grades or regulated entry requirements, finding paid work after training depends more directly on your own job search.
