Ask locally before traveling across provinces for care; necessity is generally assessed by a senior doctor
In China, the necessity of care outside your insurance area or province should generally be assessed by a doctor with an associate-chief title or above at a secondary or tertiary hospital. Reimbursement for a temporary trip for treatment can differ from reimbursement at a hospital of the same level where you are insured. Check local rules before traveling, rather than discovering the difference after arrival.
What it takes
Nothing to ask before leaving.
What you may gain
The policy generally assigns assessment of the necessity of cross-area or cross-province treatment to associate-chief physicians or above in secondary and tertiary hospitals. Crossing an insurance pooling area means leaving the area where you are insured. Reimbursement for temporary cross-province treatment must maintain a reasonable difference from reimbursement at same-level institutions in the home insurance area. The original describes this as lower reimbursement away from home; the actual difference depends on the applicable rules.
Context & considerations
Temporary travel for treatment and long-term residence elsewhere are different registration categories with different reimbursement arrangements. See chapter 16 for registration and conditions eligible for direct settlement. Plan reimbursement before traveling.
