The measures here are money and personal freedom. Many difficulties arise because conversations and paperwork were left too late, rather than simply from a lack of money. The final entry concerns pressure injuries in people confined to bed and uses mortality, so it is not ranked directly against the financial entries. Legal rules, benefits, phone numbers and RMB prices below concern China.

Avoid pension “investments” demanding upfront money and promised returns, including memberships, beds, apartments and travel schemes

Upfront eldercare payments tied to promised returns can be the same fundraising scam under different names: cards, beds, apartments, retirement travel or product seminars. Chinese rules leave participants bearing unrecovered losses. One advance-bed-reservation case collected RMB 136 million from over 2,100 people. The key point to interrupt is payment.

Distinguish regulated reverse-mortgage pension insurance from home-backed investment scams; never mortgage the home to buy a promoted investment

The cited Chinese regulator distinguishes insurers' reverse-mortgage pension insurance, then a limited pilot, from schemes persuading older people to mortgage their home and invest the proceeds. Some victims did not realize their homes were mortgaged and ultimately lost both the home and the borrowed money while retaining debt.

Apply locally for long-term care insurance after persistent severe loss of independence; eligibility is not limited to older people

China's long-term care insurance helps fund care for people with persistent severe disability, generally lasting over six months. Covered care has no deductible; employee-policy coverage is about 70% and nonemployed resident-policy coverage about 50%. Bed and meal charges are excluded. There is no age cutoff: younger people with severe loss of independence can also qualify.

For someone confined to bed, prevent pressure injuries with an appropriate support surface, regular repositioning and daily skin checks

Older hip-fracture patients with pressure injuries before surgery had roughly 20% higher 30-day mortality odds. Powered air surfaces reduced new pressure injuries by about 60% in pooled comparisons; a trial that reliably implemented repositioning reported about 70% fewer. Avoid prolonged prone positioning. Check sacrum/tailbone, heels, hips, shoulders and back daily, and seek nursing/medical advice that day for redness that does not blanch with pressure.
