Keep electric bicycles out of corridors and elevators, and do not charge them at home
The source describes bringing e-bikes into corridors or elevators and charging them at home as prohibited by China's high-rise fire-safety rules. Refusing to correct a violation can mean an RMB 500–1,000 fine for non-business users, or RMB 2,000–10,000 for businesses. The bigger issue is a fire blocking your only escape route.
What it takes
Free. The inconvenience is walking a few dozen extra meters to the communal charging area downstairs every time.
What you may gain
China's Ministry of Emergency Management rules expressly prohibit parking or charging electric bicycles in shared entrance halls, evacuation corridors, stairwells and emergency exits in high-rise civil buildings. Both parking and charging are prohibited in those locations. Failure to correct a violation attracts fines of RMB 500–1,000 for non-commercial organizations and individuals, and RMB 2,000–10,000 for commercial organizations and individuals.
Context & considerations
Do not buy modified batteries, use unbranded chargers or leave batteries charging unattended overnight. A lithium battery fire can spread within tens of seconds while producing highly toxic smoke. An e-bike burning in a corridor can destroy the only escape route. Verification pending in the source: official national annual figures for e-bike fires and deaths.
