If robbed in an isolated place, prioritize escape over money, avoid fighting, remember details and report afterward
The source recommends handing over money without fighting or arguing when physically threatened. Under Chinese law, robbery's basic sentence is 3–10 years; armed robbery, home invasion or serious injury/death can bring 10 years to death. Pursuing and attacking someone after they leave is no longer stopping an ongoing attack. Once safe, record appearance, accent, plate number and escape direction and call China's 110.
What it takes
The cash you carry. Controlling anger is difficult.
What you may gain
Life is worth more than cash. China's Criminal Law Article 263 provides 3–10 years plus a fine for taking property by violence, coercion or other means, and 10 years or more up to death for specified aggravated circumstances including firearms, home invasion and serious injury/death. Article 20 self-defense addresses an ongoing unlawful infringement. Chasing and striking someone after they have taken money and left is outside that rationale. Record identifying details immediately after escape and call 110.
Context & considerations
Grade C because no direct study supports the safety comparison of surrendering money versus resisting; the statutes establish legal consequences and limits. Do not accompany the person to an isolated withdrawal location, disclose a phone passcode or enter their vehicle. The surrender advice concerns immediate physical threats, followed by reporting. Online blackmail over intimate photos/videos is addressed differently: see Chapter 8, entry 32, which advises against payment.
