From age 40, women should have a screening mammogram every two years

Grade A evidenceValue: Moderate
In plain language

US screening guidance explicitly recommends mammograms every two years for women aged 40–74. For women 75 or older, and for additional ultrasound or MRI in dense breasts, the evidence is considered insufficient. You can decline these as paid extras in routine checkup packages.

What it takes

In China, mammography costs around RMB 200–300 per visit, and many areas offer free programs. Allow half a day every two years.

What you may gain

The US Preventive Services Task Force gives a grade B recommendation for biennial screening mammography at ages 40–74. Mammography is a breast X-ray. It finds insufficient evidence for screening women aged 75 or older, or for supplementary ultrasound or MRI in women with dense breasts.

Context & considerations

Starting ages vary by country; some Chinese guidelines and local programs begin at 45. People with a parent, child or full sibling who has had breast cancer, or a BRCA mutation, are at high risk and need an individualized plan from a clinician. This general recommendation does not apply to them.
