Avoid impulsive livestream tips, game purchases and shopping

Grade B evidenceValue: Moderate
In plain language

Chinese gaming revenue averaged about RMB 480 per user yearly. Adults generally cannot undo voluntary spending simply because they regret it. Special refund rules protect some unauthorized spending by minors. Set payment barriers in advance: disable password-free payments, cap individual and daily transactions, and unlink payment methods.

What it takes

Free. Take a few minutes to disable password-free payments, set per-transaction and daily caps, and remove saved payment methods. Resisting the final tap is the ongoing challenge.

What you may gain

China's 2024 domestic gaming revenue was RMB 325.783 billion across 674 million users, roughly RMB 480 each by division. Purchases and tips generally cannot be recovered on regret alone. A Chinese Supreme People's Court rule supports a guardian's refund request where a person with limited civil capacity, here a minor, spent without consent. Adults do not receive that same protection. Chinese minors' online-gaming access is limited to 20:00–21:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays under the 2021 rule.

Context & considerations

Grade B reflects industry totals, not a direct experiment measuring savings from avoiding tips. Payment caps and disabling password-free spending are grade C practical measures. Children's purchases gives Civil Code Articles 19 and 145. This is not investment advice.
