After making a sample, check the requirements for production before committing
The difference between one sample and a thousand units is where money becomes tied up. Yield determines actual cost; minimum orders and payment terms determine upfront financing; inventory determines when cash returns. Products on China's compulsory-certification list cannot leave the factory or be sold without certification and its mark.
What it takes
A few hundred RMB for a small trial batch, plus several hours calculating yield (how many of every 100 units are good enough to sell), supplier minimum orders and payment terms, inventory capital, packaging, shipping, certifications, permits and trademarks. Resist skipping directly to production.
What you may gain
Yield—the proportion of a batch good enough to sell—determines actual unit cost. Suppliers' minimum order quantities and the delay before payment reaches you determine working-capital needs. Inventory determines cash recovery timing. Products in China's compulsory-certification catalog must be certified and marked before factory release or sale. Unauthorized release or sale is penalized under the Certification and Accreditation Regulations. Catering and food sales need applicable food-operation permission. Chinese rules apply.
